Unleash Prosperity Hotline Issue #189 12/29/2020 |
1) Trump Green Lights Emergency Scholarships We at CTUP have been urging Trump for months to issue an Executive Order allowing low-income and mostly minority families to receive unspent federal funds for tuition at private schools that are open and actually teaching students in the classroom. Now Trump has issued a gutsy presidential directive to do just that. We can think of a few policies that could do more to reduce the education/income gap between rich and poor than this. Here is his order: The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall take steps, consistent with law, to allow funds available through the Community Services Block Grant program to be used by grantees and eligible entities to provide emergency learning scholarships to disadvantaged families for use by any child without access to in-person learning. These scholarships may be used for: (i) tuition and fees for a private or parochial school; (ii) homeschool, microschool, or learning-pod costs; (iii) special education and related services, including therapies; or (iv) tutoring or remedial education. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-expanding-educational-opportunity-school-choice/ It’s a policy that only teacher unions could hate. But since the NEA and AFT effectively run the Democratic party, expect Biden to reverse the policy. The Democrats’ position is that we must force low-income children to stay enrolled in poor-performing, union-controlled schools – that are closed. Remember this the next time you hear liberals pontificate about how much they care about blacks and Hispanics. |
