Remember when people used to thumb their nose at Alabama? Now it’s one of the hot destination states. According to Internal Revenue Service data, as reported by the Unleash Prosperity “Vote with your feet” website,  2012 through 2023, Alabama attracted 99,000 net domestic migrants from out of state. This is almost the same size of the crowd in Tuscaloosa at Bryant-Denny Stadium when the University of Alabama Crimson Tide plays at home (capacity 100,000).

A quick review of the data on our VoteWithYourFeet website shows that over the 12 year 2012 to 2023 period, the net gain in income from immigration was $3.5 billion. This is the equivalent of more than $1,000 per resident in the state, with its 2023 population of 5.1 million.

Alabama ranked seventh in net domestic migration out of the 50 states. Since 2000, Alabama has improved from a national rank of 13th in 2001 to the present 7th.

Amazingly, last year Alabama surpassed Florida in net domestic migration. Florida ranked 8th in 2025, after having been ranked first or second in the US in every year since 2010.
