South Africa is now well past the peak of its Omicron wave, and the percentage of cases that result in death (case fatality rate) has fallen off the table.  Pieter Streicher of the University of Johannesburg projects that that for Gauteng Province (population 18 million) where Omicron started: “C-19 deaths are expected to total 640 for this wave, 25x lower compared to Delta (15,400).”
