Who Killed TV Comedy?

Lorne Michaels, the creator of “Saturday Night Live” once said: “If a culture doesn’t allow you to laugh at the leaders or at things that your eyes and ears tell you are actually happening, that’s not good.” Mel Brooks has said he could not make the legendary movie Blazing Saddles in today’s woke culture.

Now Jon Lovitz, who became a star during his five seasons on SNL, complains that late-night comedy hosts have “become very political” and “one-sided.”

“They’ve become, ‘Here’s my political agenda,’” he said. “They’re very open about it. Where’s the comedians and the stand-up and the bits, you know, like (David) Letterman? It was comedy.”

Trump is fair game, of course.  But the shame is that with a President like Joe Biden, a VP like Kamala Harris, and Democratic leaders like Nancy Pelosi and AOC – the writers and hosts have a Pandora’s Box of funny material to spoof and satirize. The scripts practically write themselves.
